Pin cloth to a character

Attach parts of a garment, such as a waistband or straps, using an ordinary Blender vertex group.

You will

A garment held in place where it should be, simulating freely everywhere else.

Before you start
  • The Getting started path.
  • A garment with the Cloth role.

Step by step

  1. Create a vertex group

On the cloth object, add a vertex group, for example "pins".

  2. Paint only the attachment

In Weight Paint mode, paint only the vertices that must stay attached, such as a waistband. Keep the area small; do not paint half the garment.

  3. Enable pinning

In the Pinning panel of the cloth, turn on Enable Pinning and choose your vertex group as Pin Group.

  4. Choose how pins move

Set Pin Mode: Static keeps the pins where they are at Bake Start; Follow Animation makes them follow the animated Blender positions through the bake range.

  5. Test it

Bake a short range and check the attachment before baking the whole shot.

Check the result

The pinned area stays attached (or follows the animation), and the rest of the garment moves freely.

If something goes wrong

The garment looks stiff
The pin group is too large. Remove weight from areas that should move.
Pins stay behind while the character moves
Set Pin Mode to Follow Animation.
