Add gravity, wind and air

Use an Empty with the Force role to control gravity, wind and how cloth reacts to air.

You will

Cloth moving in wind, with gravity and air resistance you control.

Before you start
  • A scene that bakes.

Step by step

  1. Add an Empty

Add an Empty, turn on Cloth neXt for it in the Physics tab and set Object Type to Force.

  2. Set gravity

Gravity is 9.81 by default. Gravity Axis chooses its direction and does not depend on how the Empty is rotated.

  3. Add wind

Increase Wind. It blows along the Empty's local +Z axis, so rotate the Empty to aim it.

  4. Make the air work

Wind only pushes the cloth while Air Density is above zero. The default 0.01 gives a visible effect.

  5. Add gusts

Under Gusts & Turbulence, add gust strength for gusts; Noise Scale makes them slower and broader or quicker. Scrub the timeline to preview the wind.

  6. Animate if needed

Keyframe the values like any Blender property; animated values are used during the bake.

Check the result

The cloth moves in the direction the Empty points, and gusts vary over time if you added them.

If something goes wrong

Wind has no effect
Air Density is zero. Set it above zero.
Cloth floats or falls the wrong way
Check Gravity Axis; rotating the Empty does not change gravity.
