Beginner · Lesson 5 of 5
Tune the cloth material
Start from a preset and change only the setting that matches what you see. One change at a time.
You will
A fabric that moves the way you want, reached with a few deliberate changes.
Before you start
- A short test scene that bakes (lesson 3).
Which setting to change
| What you see | Change |
|---|---|
| The fabric feels too light or too heavy | Surface Weight |
| It stretches too much, or feels stiff in its surface | Stretch Resistance |
| Folds are too sharp, too soft or too broad | Bend Resistance |
| It slides too easily or sticks to things | Friction |
| It should be smaller or larger at rest | Shrink (positive shrinks, negative grows) |
Step by step
- Pick the closest preset
Choose the Material Preset that is closest to your fabric. Presets are starting points.
- Bake a short test
Bake your short test range and watch how the cloth moves.
- Name the problem
Describe what looks wrong in one sentence, then find it in the table above.
- Change one setting
Change only that setting, in small steps. The preset switches to Custom and keeps your values.
- Bake again and compare
Rebake the test and compare. Repeat until it looks right, then bake the full shot.
Check the result
The test bake shows the behaviour you wanted, and you changed only the settings that address it.
If something goes wrong
- Shrink is rejected
- Shrink cannot be combined with an enabled, non-zero Stretch Limit. Cloth neXt reports this before the bake; turn one of them off.
- Flutter or jitter
- Check stiffness and contact first, then add small Shape or Fold Damping values.
